10 Most Famous Paintings By Vincent Van Gogh

Van Gogh was a painter who was commissioned among the greatest in history. His work had a great effect on 20th century art, with its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color. He died shortly after his last piece was created: Portrait of Dr. Gachet.

#10 ALMOND BLOSSOMS

Year: 1890

In 1890, Van Gogh’s brother Theo had a son who was named Vincent after the artist. Van Gogh was very close with his nephew, and wrote that “He always looks with great interest at Uncle Vincent’s paintings.” To celebrate his nephew’s birth, Van Gogh created this painting.


#9 WHEATFIELD WITH CYPRESSES

Year: 1889

A painting by Vincent Van Gogh, Wheatfield with Cypresses, is the title of three paintings. These paintings are very similar in composition. The above painting is the first of the three, made in July 1889 and it’s one of his best landscape paintings. When he finished this painting, he made two more that are similar in composition. The above painting is the one which is present at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.


#8 BEDROOM IN ARLES

Year: 1888

This painting is the first version of three similar paintings. The three paintings can be differentiated by their subjects. This version has miniatures of Van Gogh’s portraits of his friends in it, hanging on the right wall. Vincent painted his bedroom, which was famous because it was called ‘The Yellow House’, located at 2 Place Lamartine Arles, Bouches-du-Rhone France.

#7 THE POTATO EATERS

Year: 1885

Van Gogh believed his painting, The Potato Eaters, was his best work because he painted the peasants as realistically as possible. He deliberately chose people who appeared to have worked the earth themselves with their own hands for the painting and wrote to his sister that what he thinks about his own work is that there is no better example of it than this.


#6 SELF-PORTRAIT WITH BANDAGED EAR

Year: 1889

Vincent van Gogh is popular for his self-representations. He covered up 30 of them during his life. This one is popular for the story behind it. After an episode with one more conspicuous painter of the time, Paul Gauguin, Van Gogh cut off piece of his own left year with a razor. He then, at that point, went to a whorehouse and told a whore named Rachel to ‘monitor this article with your life’. This is one of the two self-pictures he painted after the episode. It is to be noticed that it was his left ear that was wrapped; it shows up right as Van Gogh has utilized a mirror to lay out the picture.


#5 CAFE TERRACE AT NIGHT

Year: 1888

This painting was one of the first in which Van Gogh used a starry background. Visitors can still stand at the northeastern corner of the Place du Forum and see the café as Vincent painted it. It is popularly debated whether it is an innovative depiction of The Last Supper. There are many references to this painting in popular culture, and even a Croatian cafe designed itself to resemble the Café Terrace placed in the painting.


#4 PORTRAIT OF DR. GACHET

Year: 1890

On May 15, 1990, Van Gogh’s “Portrait of Dr. Gachet” sold for US$82.5 million making it the most expensive painting ever sold and one of the most revered paintings by Van Gogh. It remains the highest price paid for art at a public auction and ranks six on the inflation-adjusted list of most expensive paintings ever sold.

#3 IRISES

Year: 1889

One of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings is “Irises.” It was painted in the year before his death and he referred to it as a lightning rod for his mental health. In September 1987, “Irises” was sold for $53.9 million, making it the most expensive painting ever sold at that time. However, its record has now been surpassed with inflation adjustment and ranks 15th on the list of most expensive paintings ever sold.
